Federal Disability Retirement is a benefit available through the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). It provides income and health insurance continuity to federal employees who can no longer perform their job due to a medical condition. This is not Social Security Disability — it’s a separate benefit designed specifically for federal workers.
Federal Disability Retirement is for career federal employees who:
1. Have completed at least 18 months of creditable service under FERS, and
2. Are medically unable to perform the essential duties of their current position.
You do not need to be totally disabled — just unable to perform your specific job. If your agency can’t reasonably accommodate your condition or reassign you, you may be eligible.
Keep your federal life insurance (FEGLI) active into retirement. Approved disability retirement lets you maintain basic and optional FEGLI coverage, providing peace of mind for your family’s future.
Continue your federal health benefits (FEHB) without interruption. Disability retirement allows you to retain your current plan, with the government still covering the majority of the premium.
Eligible spouses can receive survivor annuity benefits after your death, ensuring continued income and FEHB coverage. Survivor elections are made during the application process.
Receive a monthly, tax-advantaged annuity—even if you're under standard retirement age. This benefit provides income stability while protecting your future federal retirement.
Your time on disability retirement counts toward your federal service. At age 62, your annuity automatically converts to a standard FERS retirement—often at a higher rate.
You’re allowed to work in the private sector while receiving FERS Disability Retirement, as long as you're not employed in a federal position and stay under the earnings cap.
Receive personalized, step-by-step guidance through the entire application process while retaining control over completing and submitting your claim independently.
Receive a detailed review of key documents—including your SF3112, SF3107, and physician statement—to identify potential risk factors and red flags that could impact your claim.
Access checklists, templates, and guides to help you stay organized and meet all requirements for your disability retirement application.
